Question
I turned 50 years old on March 17. I have recently realized that I have no idea what I want for the rest of my life. It seems like there has ALWAYS been something missing, but I can't seem to figure it out. If I don't find a connection soon, I don't know what will happen to me. Is it true that we all have a gift to bring to this world? If so, how can I figure out what I am here to do? I need to give my life meaning.
Answer
Turning 50 does prompt us to re-evaluate our lives. For some the road may not be clear. Yes, I do believe we each have a gift, but sometimes it can be incredibly difficult to recognize that gift. Our interaction with our own lives blocks our natural ability to "see." The gift can be the ability to share unselfishly with those in need; to help the environment; to nurture animals in need; to create beautiful artwork; and the list goes on and on. Unfortunately, many times we want our gift to be clear and important (by others' standards), and it does not seem so. One's gift may be subtle and peaceful or filled with excitement and obvious rewards. So, it's a confusing issue at a confusing time in your life. Your energy feels ready to explore new things - let the past go and focus on learning new skills (massage therapy, nursing, counseling?). You are closer than you may think.
