Question
I am considering loaning money to a friend/business partner. She hasn't handled her financial issues well in the past, but I believe she's honest and ready to get her life organized. Should I loan her the money?
Answer
There are several issues here you must consider: 1. If she does not repay you, can you do without the money (you didn't say how much you were considering loaning her)? 2. Can you two continue working together with the tension of a loan hanging over your heads? 3. How certain are you that she's changed her financial habits?
In general, a loan to a friend is a bad idea. Nothing ends a friendship faster. A gift, that's another matter since you don't expect to be repaid. So, if you wish to make a small loan, go ahead, but don't get involved with a large amount of money, it's too risky, and she may not have changed as much as you would hope.
