Question
Once again as the holidays and the new year approach, I find myself getting a bit nervous about how to deal with my family issues. I love them all, but I don't always enjoy their company. I feel out of place and can't figure out why this is worse this time of year. Is it just the tension of the holiday season or do I have a deeper problem?
Answer
Feeling out of place when surrounded by your own family is not an unusual sensation. It's important that you don't worry about it too much - believe it or not, it's fairly commonplace and even normal. We are each very unique, but we are all connected on a spiritual level. Many times our biological family serves as a laboratory for learning. That can be very uncomfortable and bring up childhood issues as well as way too many self-condemning thoughts. If you can relax and just be yourself when you're with your family, you may be surprised at how they will accept you and you can enjoy their company. By trying to relax into their company, you can create a healthier environment all year long.
