Question
For some reason, I am beginning to be more interested in my family's history. How important is it to learn about our ancestors? How much influence does family history have on our personal growth? I'm not sure what I'll find - should I dig into the past? It actually seems a little scary to me.
Answer
I don't believe you'll find anything too scary hidden in your family tree. Since your interest seems to be growing, it is a good time to do a little research. We all go through time periods (usually two to three years) when we need to focus on one specific area of our lives in order to move to the next phase of growth. Your need is obviously to learn more about your roots. You will, of course, learn lots about yourself in this process. You are very open to new information right now so my only comment is to avoid taking it all too seriously. See the big picture - don't allow yourself to focus on one relative more than another. Explore your family tree starting with the now and work backwards. Talking to living elderly relatives is a good way for you to start. You'll know how far back you need to go - that may only be several generations. Where your family has lived will be very interesting to you - create a map if you like - that would be fun for you.
