Question
I have been working with a volunteer organization for some years now, and I know that most groups of people have to work through personality issues, but I don't know how to address this one. There are several people in the organization that do not seem to have the overall best interest of the group in mind. They are rude and self-centered. I'm ready to leave the group, but it just doesn't feel fair. Should I try to talk with other members to see if they agree? Confront these rude people? Leave the group? It's a difficult decision since it's a cause I believe in very strongly.
Answer
I agree with you on both counts: It's a difficult decision, and it does happen in most groups - human beings will be human beings. Rarely does it work to talk with other members, and in this case, I feel that would make it worse instead of better. I don't sense that these "rude" people you mention have any intention of leaving the group, and confronting them would be futile. Why not try to form your own group or find a group with similar interests in your area (even in a neighboring town). I don't feel there is much you can do to remedy the situation. Whatever you do, don't give up on a cause you believe in so strongly.
