Question
As I stumble through the holidays this year, I wonder why the air around me feels so "mixed" with emotions. I always expect joy, peace, and excitement, but usually end up sensing as much sadness, anger, and frustration. Is it like this every year, or am I getting more and more sensitive to others and their moods. Shouldn't the holiday season be happy? I have heard the comments about how so many people are depressed this time of year. Is that what affects us all? If so, it boggles my mind. How can so few affect so many? Is this year worse than usual?
Answer
I don't believe this year is much different actually. It may be somewhat more stressful with so many troops in Iraq - at least in certain areas - but it's always this way. You mentioned expecting joy, peace, and excitement. It's those expectations that set the stage for suffering in many people. Life during the holiday season gets more frantic, more demanding, and more frustrating for most people, but the joy of sharing can overcome a great deal of that frustration. Are you getting more sensitive? Yes you are. So be aware of that fact and focus your energy on positive people and positive thoughts as much as you can. Let the new year begin with that excitement you have deep inside. You're overall a very positive person - be a good example throughout the year.
